Erected by the United Daughters of the Confederacy of Abbeville County in memory of the 350 Abbeville citizens who died in the Civil War. The cost was $3,500. In December 1991, the obelisk was severely damaged by fire when the Town's Christmas tree, which was built with cedar branches and lights around the monument annually, ignited. The obelisk was removed by the Town for safety reasons. As of August 1993, the monument has not been restored and the base remains. IAS files include the text of the inscriptions and a related article from the State (Columbia, SC) Nov. 15, 1993.
