Description:
A bronze standing figure of a Confederate soldier, atop a granite column made of 13 stone cylinders to represent the 13 Confederate States. The soldier holds his rifle vertically by his proper right side. The granite column is topped by an ornate Corninthian capital, modelled after Pompey's Pillar in Egypt. At the foot of the column is a square base surrounded by a wrought iron fence.

Remarks:
The monument was erected by the Soldiers and Sailors Monument Association formed on Dec. 1, 1887. The Richmond City Council donated the installation site and contributed $5,000 toward the cost; the State of Virginia donated $3,200; and the remaining $8,000 to $10,000 was raised through public subscription. IAS files contain newspaper articles from the Richmond Dispatch, May 20, 1894 and May 31, 1894, pg. 1; and a copy of the contract with the artist. IAS files also contain entry from checklist "Outdoor Sculpture Survey, 1986, Richmond, Virginia, prepared for the Statuary Study Committee by Tricia Pearsall."
