Remarks:
The sculpture was installed in honor of Major General Henry Lawton, killed by a sniper's bullet on December 19, 1899 while leading American forces during the Philippine Insurrection. Lawton was born in 1843 and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel during the Civil War. He led several Indian campaigns, and as a United States Army lieutenant captain, captured Chief Geronimo. Lawton served as Brigadier General during the Spanish American War. The artist was assisted by Major General Leonard Wood and war correspondent John T. McCutcheon, both of whom served with Lawton in the Philippines.
