Remarks:
The monument was presented by the citizens of South Berwick to the Grand Army of the Republic on Memorial Day in 1901. The monument cost $1,450 and was funded through a "variety of projects and by direct appeal to the citizenry at a town meeting." When the monument was erected there were 66 soldier's names inscribed on the base. The other names have been added over time. IAS files contain a related excerpt from Maurice J. Warner's "Civil War Memorials Erected in the State of Maine," Augusta, ME: Maine Civil War Centennial Commission, 1965.
