Remarks:
James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916) was a poet who was born in Greenfield, Indiana, and moved to Indianapolis. He died one week after sitting for this portrait. The bust was given in memory of William Coleman Akins by his grandmother, Sallie E. Coleman, on Oct. 7, 1937. Prior to its installation at the Riley home, it was displayed inside the Riley Hospital for Children for several decades. When relocated to Riley's home, Flanner & Buchanan Mortuaries provided the limestone pedestal. At the Riley home, the sculpture was installed facing the rose garden the sitter loved. The sculpture was rededicated on Oct. 7, 1993, the 144th anniversary of Riley's birth.
