Formerly in the collection of Kunstauktionshaus Schloss Ahlden, Ahlden, Germany 1999.
Formerly in the collection of Anonymous Collection,
Heritage Auction Galleries, 1518 Slocum Street, Dallas, Texas Sale (Nov. 10, 2010), lot 65017
    Remarks:
In 1999, the painting was up for sale at Kunstauktionshaus Schloss Ahlden, Ahlden, Germany under the title "Die Braut Christi" (The Bride of Christ). In 2010, the painting was sold from the collection of a Southwestern private collector through Heritage Auction Galleries under the title "Receiving the Order." Subsequent research by the current owner indicates the painting may be one referenced in Wendy Greenhouse's dissertation "The American Portrayal of Tudor and Stuart History, 1835-1865" (Yale University, 1989) as "Cavalier Abjuring Catholicism." The painting may also be the same referenced in Dr. Raymond L. Stehle's unpublished manuscript "The Life and Works of Emanuel Leutze" (1972) which cites a brief article in the New York Evening Post (July 21, 1864) describing an unfinished painting with a similar subject, though the title was not given in the 1864 article.
