Description:
Christopher Columbus stands holding a flag pole in his proper right hand and a map in his lowered proper left hand. Columbus wears a hat, tunic, knee-length coat with fur collar and puffed sleeves, and boots. He has a sword hanging from his belt on his proper left side and a money bag on his proper right. The sculpture is set in a landscaped area, with three smaller rock piles in front of it that are inscribed: Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria.

Nearby plaque reads: "TO NO MAN IN MODERN HISTORY/DOES THE WORLD OWE SO/GREAT A DEBT AS TO/CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS."/-SAMUEL ELIOT MORISON.
The sculpture cost $50,000 and was funded by the local Italian community. It was part of the celebration of the 500th anniversary of Columbus' voyage to the New World. It was originally installed at Central and Columbus Avenues, in Phoenix, but was moved nine months after's initial installation, because the property was sold. IAS files contain related articles from the Arizona Republic, Oct. 8, 1992, pg. B-1; and July 28, 1993, pg. A16. IAS files contain transcription of a nearby plaque with the names of donors.
