The idea for a monument originated around 1929 with R. G. Schreck, former Supervisor at the Huron National Forest. Funds for the $50,000 monument were collected from lumbermen the state. The monument was erected in 1932 and dedicated July 16, 1932. In 1982, a three-year reconstruction project of the Lumbermens Monument Visitor Center was completed and the monument was rededicated. IAS files contain a list of the names of the lumbermen inscribed on the monument and a brochure entitled "River Road: National Forest Scenic Byway," USDA Forest Service, Huron-Manistee National Forests.
