Tamanend, (sculpture).
Artist:
Sandoval, Ray, sculptor.
Title:
Tamanend, (sculpture).
Dates:
1994-1995.
Medium:
Bronze.
Description:
Full length figure of a Native American standing on a turtle, an eagle holding a wampum belt perched on his shoulder. The sculpture represents Tamanend, a Sakima Indian of the Lenni-Lenape Nation. The turtle symbolizes Mother Earth and the eagle symbolizes the Great Spirit. Tamanend, who lived in the Delaware Valley when Philadelphia was established, took part in a friendship treaty between William Penn and other leaders of the Lenni-Lenape Nation. The treaty which was signed under the Sackomaxen elm reads: "to live in peace as long as the waters are in the rivers and creeks and as long as the stars and moon endure." Tamanend participated in several treaties that enabled William Penn to purchase the land that is Philadelphia from the Lenni-Lenape. A popular figure among the colonists, Tamanend's contributions were remembered every year on the first of May when bells all over Philadelphia were rung in his honor.
