Elizabeth Martin Fairchild was born in 1812 and died in Carrollton, Louisiana in 1873. She was the daughter of Hugh and Maria (Fairley) Martin. Her first husband was Isaac Fairchild. Her second husband was the artist, although at the time he painted this portrait they were not married. The artist sent the portrait to her mother, Mrs. Maria Jarvis, in New Jersey in 1849, along with a portrait of Mrs. Fairchild's daughter Maria. At the time of her death, she was divorced from Byrd and he had already remarried.
