A family of bears chain saw carved out of a live tree which had been struck by lightning. The mother bear is standing and her head is turned to her proper left. One cub is climbing and the other two are reclining with paws uplifted.

Harraseeket Inn, 162 Main Street, Freeport, Maine 04032

Commissioned by the Nancy Gray, owner of the Inn after the 250 year old, 90 foot tall white ash tree was struck by lightning in June 1990. The cost was $5,500. Controversy arose when the Freeport Design Review Board designated the sculpture a sign and requested that the Inn apply for the appropriate permit. The Freeport Zoning Board of Appeals later ruled that the piece is art and needs no permit.
