Rebecca Cunningham Washington of Jefferson County, Virginia (now West Virginia) was the wife of Thomas Blackburn Washington (1812-1854), who was the great, great nephew of President George Washington. The portrait was painted while Mrs. Washington lived at "Claymont Court" and the southern view is the Blue Ridge Mountains as seen from "Claymont Court."

Mrs. Rebecca Washington was the wife of Thomas Blackburn Washington, 1812-1854, of "Claymont Court" and "Blakeley" plantations in Jefferson County, now West Virginia. The sitter's maiden name is possibly Rebecca Janet Cunningham or Rebecca Janet Herbert, with life dates of 1820-1890. The painting was formerly titled Mrs. Rebecca Washington of "Southern View" Plantation, the State of Virginia.

Happy Retreat is the former home of Charles Washington, the founder of Charles Town, West Virginia and brother of President George Washington.
