Remarks:
Pupuli-alii-opu means "Crazy Chief's belly" in Hawaiian. Sculpture originally included a bowling ball as the chief's head, but in 1992 it was decapitated. In 1993, as part of an art show celebrating the 90th anniversary of the first powered flight, the head and wings of Icarus were added to the sculpture. For 1993 only the official name of the sculpture was changed to "The Metamorphosis of Pupuli-alli-opu to Icarus or the Port-o-gee from Kaimuki Goes Greek." The second half of the title takes root in the artist's Hawaiian and Portuguese heritage. According to local legend, if you close your eyes and rub the Chief's belly your wish will come true. IAS files contain a letter by the artist and newsclippings from the Beachcomber (NC), April 4, 1986, pg. 4, which refers to the sculpture as "Puli-alii-opu." IAS files also contain a newsclipping from the Coastland Times (NC), Nov. 30, 1993.
