    Description: 
    Full-length statue of a Civil War soldier atop a multi-tiered base with a trapezoidal cap, four-sided rectangular shaft, and a three-stepped plinth. Soldier, in uniform, wears cap, shoulder-length cape, knee-length coat, trousers, and shoes. He grips a flagpole with the proper left hand, brandishes a sword in the proper right; sword is held with the point facing the ground and the blade crossing in front of the body towards proper left. Proper right foot is placed on the ground forward of the proper left; stance is standing or walking slowly. Shaft of base carries bronze inscribed plaques: Grand Army of the Republic relief medallion (front); bust of President Lincoln, in relief (proper left); a battle scene, showing infantry, cavalry, and artillery (proper right).

    Remarks: 
    Monument was proposed at the town's annual meeting in 1893 and erected the following year at a cost of $1,500. Statue and other metal components were cast by the Monumental Bronze Company; granite base was provided by Webb Granite Company. IAS files contain related newsclipping from Keen Evening Sentinel, dated Sept. 19, 1984.
