This sculpture symbolizes his desire to preserve baseball for the future generations of his beloved community. Remarks:
Memorial to Morrie Silver, a Rochester, New York businessman who preserved professional baseball in that city through a stock subscription campaign. From the 1920s the Red Wings had been a top farm club of the St. Louis Cardinals, enjoying many successful seasons in the Flower City. Following the 1956 season, the Cardinals decided to divest themselves of the Red Wings and their Rochester ball park. This created the dire possibility of the city losing its professional ball club, or a potential new ownership, which might not value the community. Morrie Silver, a successful businessman, realized how central a baseball team and the ball park experience were to a solid societal foundation. Mr. Silver launched a campaign to purchase the Red Wings and their ball park from the Cardinals through a stock subscription, which he reinforced with his own investment. His efforts were successful, and the Red Wings were preserved, and strengthened through community ownership. In 1997, the team began play at Frontier Field in Downtown Rochester, along Platt Street, which was renamed Morrie Silver Way. The youth is the allegorical representation of the grateful posterity who will have the good fortune to grow-up amidst professional baseball in Rochester due to Mr. Silver's determined efforts. The sculpture was dedicated July 25, 2007, marking the 50 successful seasons since Mr. Silver lead the effort to save professional baseball in the City of Rochester.
