    Description:
The sculptor drew upon Japanese tradition in creating this monument which consists of three travertine stones of varying sizes placed in a triangular formation. The tall central one symbolizes heaven and the two flanking stones symbolize the earth and humankind. The central stone is draped with two symbolic strands --one represents a steel cable relating to Richmond's port and industrial activity, and the other represents a silken rope referring to Japan. Upon the central stone are the Kanji characters for "Friendship." The three stones rest on separate bases and a stone walkway leads up to the central stone.
