The Town appropriated $500 and another $500 was raised from the citizenry. The project was initiated about 1900 and was approved by the Town on March 12, 1900. The figure is modeled after the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in South Portland, and both figures are copies after the work of the same name by Martin Milmore, located on the Boston Common.
