    Full-length portrait of John Butterfield stands on a rectangular pedestal. The figure wears a suit with bow tie, vest and double-breasted jacket with tails. His proper right hand rests on a tree stump over which a cape is draped.

    Remarks: 
    John Butterfield (1801-1869) was a Utica businessman who founded the Overland Mail Company which transported mail between Missouri and California. He was also one of the co-founders and first president of American Express. IAS files contain a related article from the Utica Dispatch.
