    Remarks:
The sculpture was erected in memory of those men who enlisted from the Town of Cheshire during the Civil War. The sculpture's chief benefactor was George A. Jarvis of Brooklyn, New York, and a native of Cheshire, who gave $1,000 on the condition that it be matched by local donations. The sculpture was possibly the first Civil War monument in the state. The sculpture originally listed names of fourteen men. Later, strong feelings arose in the town that the names of veterans as well as those who died in the war be added to the sculpture. In 1916, four bronze plaques listing Veteran names were added. IAS files contain a circa 1890 photocopied image of the sculpture without the plaques and surrounded by a low wrought-iron fence.
