Medium:
Sculpture: marble.
Dimensions:
Sculpture: approx. 6 x 6 x 4 ft.
Description:
Relief of Triton with his back attached to the side of a giant krater (classical vase) which is attached to a wall. His torso faces front, but his head is in profile facing to his proper left. His mouth is open in an expression of surprise and his hair is in tight curls around his face. He is nude with only a small shell covering his genitals. His body has well defined muscles and his arms are raised up on either side of his head, palms facing outward. His wings stretch out behind him and he appears to be flying in for a landing. His proper left knee rests on the base of the krater and his proper right leg extends out behind him. Below the thigh, both legs resemble fish tails. On his proper left, three fish are visible. At the top of the krater, on either side of Triton, are bronze pipes which hang over the edge of the krater and spout water into the rectangular fountain basin below.
