Bequest of Burke, Katherine McIntosh
Remarks:
Bequest of Katherine McIntosh Burke, a teacher and principal at the Ewa School. Statue was commissioned by Mrs. Burke's trustees for the amount of the bequest, $8,000. Sources attached to the SOS survey differ on the medium of the base; it is probably rainbow granite, though some sources list it as marble. The plaque is a gift of the Class of 1954. The sculpture underwent conservation treatment in February 1994. IAS files include the following related materials: the Quarterly Review Number, July 29, 1944, Michigan Alumnus, the Michigan Technic, v. 60 no. 5 (1942 Feb.) and the News, Feb. 1987. IAS files also contain copy of the artist's May 25, 1940 proposal for the statue, including suggested payment schedule; and copy of Katherine M. Burke's bequest/will dated Sept. 13, 1944.
