Remarks:
The sculpture was created by John Raimondi and his students in 1975 when Raimondi was a National Endowment for the Arts funded artist-in-residence at the
Portland
Regional Vocational-Technical Center. Assistance in assembling the piece was provided by Brad Brown and Andrew Rodney. Canal National Bank bought the sculpture for $10,000 and donated it to the
city
in 1975.
The phoenix is a symbol of the
city
, which burned in the 19th century. The sculpture was originally installed on Temple Street and Spring-Middle arterial. The sculpture was controversial because of its abstract nature. The steel stained the cobblestone around its base. Sculpture subsequently relocated to a grassy area in front of Barridoff Galleries.
