    A standing portrait of Newark businessman and former governor Franklin Murphy, holding a top hat in his proper right hand and a cane in his proper left hand. The sculpture rests atop an oval base made of red stone that rests on a small hillside terrace.

    Remarks: 
    Franklin Murphy (1846-1920) founded the Murphy Varnish Company in 1891 and served in various political positions on Newark's city council. In 1901, he became the first businessman elected Governor of New Jersey, a post that he held until 1903. He is responsible for planning the Essex County park system.
