Remarks:
Mrs. Ionis Martin was reported as the Chair of the Ella Burr McManus Trust in 1993. Inscription on a low marble wall on the north side of Burr Mall reads: Alfred E. Burr Mall/A Gift to the City of Hartford/From His Daughter/Ella Burr McManus/In Memory of Her Father/Dedicated in 1969. The piece cost 150,000 dollars. IAS files contain articles from The Hartford Courant (Hartford, CT), Oct. 11, 1973, pg. 37 discussing the controversy over the sculpture and The Hartford Times (Hartford, CT), Oct. 9, 1973. The sculpture was commissioned by the trustees of the Ella Burr McManus Trust Fund, at the bequest of Ella Burr McMmanus. The fund was designed to finance a memorial to her father, Alfred E. Burr, founder of the Hartford Times. Over sixty years passed before her bequest was realized. Landscape architect Daniel U. Kiley designed the surrounding mall and central fountain.
