Cost was $8,000, raised by the Golden Bears Social Club through donations. The sketch for the bear was submitted by Frank Garcia, school student activity director. Raul Ayala created the sculpture. The bricks for the base are from the old Bowie High School, razed in 1990. Sculpture was cast in Juarez, Mexico. Project engineer was Greg Ramsey; contractor for the base was Ramsey Steel, of El Paso. A time capsule is sealed in the monument.
