(On back:) Greater Love Hath No Man Than This That a Man Lay Down His Life for His Friends (On the sides of the monument are listed 71 names of those killed in World War I.) signed Founder's mark appears.
Description:
World War I memorial consisting of a tall granite shaft topped by a bronze female figure representing of Liberty. She stands on a globe which is held aloft by two eagles. Her proper right arm is raised and her proper left arm is held out in blessing. In front of the granite shaft stands a bronze figure grouping. At the front of the group is a full-length figure of a soldier dressed in uniform and carrying a rifle in his proper right hand. Behind him is a full-length figure of a sailor. A full-length female figure representing Columbia stands behind the two military figures. She wears a helmet and holds a round shield in her proper left hand. The bronze grouping stands on a stepped base surrounded by a flagstone terrace.

Remarks:
The memorial was funded by popular subscription; $85,000 was raised. The town contributed an additional $6,000 to build two small bridges and to grade the island in the park on which the memorial stands. IAS files contain transcriptions of the seventy-one names on the honor roll. IAS files contain copy of dedication ceremony brochure.
