A figure of a Union Civil War soldier leaning on his rifle as he stands watch. He holds the muzzle end of his rifle on his proper left side and rests the rifle butt on the ground by his proper right foot. The rifle once included a bayonet on the end, but it is now missing as is the scabbard once attached to the soldier's belt. The soldier is dressed in a great coat and cape made of Blue Kersey army cloth, a material made in Framingham at the Saxonville Mills. The sculpture rests on a low rectangular base.

Remarks:
Both the soldier monument and the Edgell Memorial Library were created as tributes to the 450 men from Framingham who fought in the Civil War. The memorial was commissioned for $3,000 by George Phipps, a prosperous local merchant. Originally it was installed inside the Edgell Memorial Library, but in 1888 it was moved to its present location in front of Edgell Memorial Library. George Brown paid $500 toward the purchase of a granite base for the sculpture. In 1938, the sculpture toppled off of its base during a hurricane, breaking off the figure's bayonet and scabbard. The missing bayonet and scabbard are stored at the Framingham Historical Society. Additional information is available in the archives of the Framingham Historical Society, P. O. Box 2032, Framingham, Massachusetts 01703.
