    Description:
A sculpture carved out of two attached oak tree trunks, depicting Merlin the magician wearing a long beard. His upraised head is carved out of the remnant of one trunk and the chest and belly are carved out of the remnant of another trunk and form a seating area. He appears to be emerging from the surrounding ground. The stumps' outlying roots suggest fantastical arms and the beginnings of sunken legs.

Neighborhood resident David Brooks agreed to fund the carving of the existing tree stumps; and a letter dated Sept. 15, 1990, confirms that the City of Austin, Art in Public Places Program gave approval for carving the sculpture and its donation to the city. IAS files contain related correspondence from City of Austin's Art in Public Places Program; and copies of artist's initial proposal and drawings.
