Remarks:
The idea for the monument originated in town meeting held March 1966. On June 23, 1866, at a town meeting, a committee voted to appropriate a sum not to exceed $10,000 to erect a monument in memory of the men who lost their lives in the Civil War. Vermont native, Larkin Mead of Florence, Italy, was contracted for $5,000 for a statue. Peter B. Laird, was contracted for a granite base and pedestal, from a design by architect Grebble of Philadelphia. The base was erected in the Spring of 1868; in August, the statue arrived from Italy and on Aug. 20, 1868, a dedication ceremony was held. Total cost of the monument was $8,892.
