The sculpture was a gift from the D. K. Baty family in commemoration of Mr. Baty's pioneer mother. The text appearing on the plaque was written by Harry E. Chrisman (Daily Times). IAS files contain articles from Southwest Daily Times (Liberal, KS), April 12, 1961, May 25, 1961, and May 31, 1961.
