Remarks:
The statue commemorates social reformer and Boston resident, William Lloyd Garrison (1805-1879). The statue was presented to the City by a group of Boston citizens. The group, established in 1879, included Ralph Waldo Emerson, Wendell Phillips, Samuel Cobb, and William Endicott Jr. The statue was to have been erected in 1885 on the 50th anniversary of the Boston mob of 1835. Warner produced the portrait by using a mask which John Rogers of New York took of Garrison at about age 63. The base was designed by John M. Wells, architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White, in New York City. IAS files contain conservation information.
