Columbia Savings and Loan Association Building, 20 feet south of Pikes Peak Avenue, 40 feet west of Nevada Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado
    Remarks:
The sculpture was a gift from the Columbia Savings and Loan Association. Zorach originally designed a plaster model of The Family in 1936 for a Memorial to the Pioneer Women competition sponsored by the Texas Centennial Commission. Controversy arose over the nudity of the figures, however, and the project was never completed. In the early 1960s, the piece was cast in bronze in Colorado Springs. The work was temporarily removed in 1993 by the parent company (First Nationwide Bank) during a bank merger and offered to the Denver Fine Arts Center's Taylor Museum, but public outcry resulted in returning the statue to its original location at Pike's Peak and Nevada. IAS files contain related newsclippings from The Gazette Telegraph (Colorado Springs, CO) Dec. 22, 1993, B:3.
