Remarks:
Monument honors William Raymond Morley (1846-1883), a railroad builder with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad and owner-editor of the Cimarron News & Press. It was funded through public subscription. Morley's remains and those of his family, were moved to this site from a cemetery in Las Vegas, New Mexico ca. 1993. There are boulders with plaques nearby commemorating members of the Morley family. There is also a sign behind the monument on which is affixed a paper under glass with biographical information on and photographs of William and Ada Morley. A memorial service for the reinterrment of family members was held Oct. 27, 1993. IAS files include the 1994 Foreword to the book "The Morleys: Young Upstarts on the Southwest Frontier," by Norman Cleaveland (grandson of Mr. & Mrs. Morley), and George Fitzpatrick, originally published in 1971, and text from the nearby sign and boulders. For related reading, see New Mexico Magazine, March 1991, the High Country Round-Up (New Mexico), April 7, 1993 and the Courier (New Mexico), July 21, 1994.
