Remarks:
Gift of Charles Cooper at a cost of $1,200. The original basin was designed by Austin A. Cassil. Octagonal in shape, it was built by H & J Stoyle and was a gift of Messrs. McKay & Son. Statuary depicting figures of Leda and the Swan once stood at the top of the fountain. The fountain has been moved within the Square, possibly to accommodate the Square's expansion. IAS files include excerpts from "Yesteryear Incidents," a publication of the Knox County Historical Society, which includes related article from the Mt. Vernon Banner, July 6, 1883, which has a photograph of the fountain in its original form, and "Cooper Fountain Dedication," Dec. 30, 1991, by Bill Fetters.
