    Leonidas Merritt is depicted as a timber cruiser. He stands with both arms at his sides. His proper right hand holds a hammer while his proper left hand clutches an iron ore sample. The figure is wearing a pack on his back.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was created as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) federal program. In front of the statue is a 9 1/2 ton granite boulder known as the "Rock" which symbolizes the ore Merritt and his brothers found. IAS files contain related excerpt from the book entitled "Monumental Minnesota" by Moira F. Harris dated 1992, pgs. 41-42.
