Remarks:
IAS files contain a related article from Ruff, Ann, "Amazing Texas Monuments and Museums," Houston: Lone Star Books, pg. 51, which discusses the oil industry in Texas and the origins of the "Joe Roughneck" monuments. The bust for this monument was originally cast by Lone Star Steel in the 1950's and it is one of several Roughneck busts located in the state. When the city of Kilgore contacted Lone Star Steel Company for permission to place this sculpture as part of the city's sesquicentennial celebration in 1986, they learned that the cast had been destroyed in a fire. Lone Star Steel used their original plastic mold to make this cast. The company, which holds the copyright on the design, donated the bust to the city for placement at Sesquicentennial Plaza. Inscription on nearby Official Texas Historical Subject Marker reads: THIS PLAZA COMMEMORATES THE 150TH/ANNIVERSARY OF TEXAS INDEPENDENCE/FROM MEXICO AND WAS BUILT FOR THE ENJOYMENT OF OUR CITIZENS AND/VISITORS TO OUR COMMUNITY./WE ARE VERY GRATEFUL TO THE CITIZENS,/BUSINESSES AND ORGANIZATIONS WHO/MADE THIS PROJECT POSSIBLE./THE TIME CAPSULE HOLDS MEMENTOS/FROM ACTIVITIES HELD DURING THE/CELEBRATION OF THE TEXAS SESQUI-/CENTENNIAL 1986. THIS TIME CAPSULE/IS TO BE OPENED MARCH 2, 2036./THE KILGORE SESQUICENTENNIAL/COMMISSION OF 1986.
