Remarks:
Sculpture commemorates Hampton's 375th anniversary in 1985, and the title reflects the city's anniversary slogan. Cost was $69,683, funded through the General Assembly with state and local funds. Artist sculpted work in Italy, using a teenage architectural student there as the model for the figure's body, giving it an Englishman's face. The 1995 SOS! survey reports that the sculpture seems to have been recently cleaned. Plaque mounted on granite in front of sculpture reads: First From the Sea First to the Stars/a Gift from the/Citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia/in/Commemoration/of the/375th anniversary/of the/City of Hampton/1610-1985.
IAS files contain newsclipping from the Daily Press, Oct. 4, 1987, sect. H; and News Release dated Aug. 6, 1986, from the City of Hampton, City Manager's Office.
