Inscription:  (On front of base:) IN MEMORY OF/THE DEFENDERS/OF THE/UNION/1861-1865 Description:  Full-length granite figure of a Union soldier standing at rest. He wears a uniform, kepi cap and an overcoat. He holds the muzzle of a rifle in both hands; the butt of the gun rests on the base near his feet. The figure stands on a tall square granite pedestal. Centered on the front face of the pedestal is the outline of a shield.
