(Plinth, proper left side:) A.A. Giacomantonio (Plinth, back proper left:) Roman Bronze Works, Inc. (On front:) Columbus, seafaring adventurer, is/portrayed in a pose of sighting/land. His face seems to express/discovery, that of America./Terra! Terra! signed Founder's mark appears.
Description:
A bronze statue of Christopher Columbus standing on a square bronze plinth which is attached to a rectangular concrete base. The figure of Columbus is very muscular, standing with his feet shoulder width apart. His proper right hand is raised to shade his eyes from the sun, while his proper left hand is clenched in a fist. His eyes are wide open and his lips are parted. He wears a floor-length cape, a Spanish helmet, gloves, a crucifix, and a belted sleeveless tunic.

Remarks:
This sculpture is a reproduction of a Columbus statue which was cast apporximately fifty years ago and is located in New Jersey. Unico, an Italian charitable organization, raised money for the statue and park landscaping. The inscription on plaque approximately ten feet away reads: Christopher Columbus Park/This park is dedicated in honor of/The Italian American Community of Memphis/and to their contribution to/the heritage and growth of the city./The park was made possible through the/generosity of those listed below/(List of names)/Memphis Chapter of Unico National/and/The City of Memphis/Richard C. Hackett, Mayor.
