Formerly located Near Hawkins Avenue & Carthage Street, Sanford, North Carolina
Remarks:
Monies to erect the marker were collected by J. Hampton Rich of Chapel Hill, N. C.; between $50 and $100 was raised locally in Sanford. Marker was installed and dedicated in 1927 at its original location near Hawkins Avenue and Carthage Street. In 1957 the marker was dismantled to make way for a parking lot; its rubble was searched for a metal box containing a list of contributors, which, according to rumor, had been embedded inside. Nothing was found. The monument was reconstituted and relocated to present site.
