Remarks:
The marble original of this sculpture was created in 1836 by Princess Marie, daughter of King Louis Philippe of the House of Orleans, and it is located at Versailles. After Princess Marie died in 1839, the French city of Orleans arranged for a bronze copy of the sculpture to be cast and installed in the Orleans Town Hall. The Wichita sculpture is second replica of the original and was cast in reconstituted stone with a bronze patina. The sculpture was given by Wichita's sister city, Orleans, France, to commemorate the 100th birthday of Wichita, Kansas in June 1970. IAS files contain a newspaper article from the Wichita Beacon, May 4, 1979; an excerpt from "Ideas, Actions, Accomplishments" 1970 Wichita annual report; and a brochure entitled, "Sister Cities: Wichita, Orleans, Tlalnepantla, Cancun.
Because of deterioration, a bronze copy was created in 1996 and placed outside the Wichita Public Library (see IAS record KS000663). IAS files contain related newspaper articles from The Wichita Eagle, Nov. 10, 1996 and Dec. 17, 1996.
