Remarks:
Colonel William Crawford (1732-1782) was a Connellsville, Pennsylvania pioneer who served as colonel in the Seventh Virginia Regiment and crossed the Delaware with George Washington in 1777. As commander of the Sandusky expedition, he was captured by Indians and burned at the stake near Crawfordsville, Ohio on June 11, 1782. The sculpture was erected by the City of Connellsville and the Pennsylvania Historical Commission through the William Crawford Memorial Commission to mark Crawford's home which was made a historic site in 1981. The cost of the sculpture was $3,442. Funds were raised through donations, and a $750 contribution given by both the Pennsylvania Historical Commission and the City of Connellsville. The inscription on base is by Rev. Ellis B. Burgess. The figure's sword has been stolen twice and is stored in the library.
