Located Calzone Memorial Park, Main & Beach Streets, Milford, Massachusetts
Provenance:
Formerly located Supple Square, Intersection of Main & East Main Streets, Milford, Massachusetts
Remarks:
The monument commemorates soldiers of World War I and is informally known as the "Doughboy." The setting was designed by T. P. Murray, and the granite for the base came from William M. Sherman's quarry. The monument was originally erected at Supple Square, but by October 8, 1932 it was moved under the direction of the Soldiers Monument Committee to the new Calzone Memorial Park. The SOS! survey gives the dedication date as November 11, 1921, also notes an article from the Milford Daily News, July 18, 1918, which describes the dedication. For additional information see the Milford Historical Commission's Form C-Monuments survey by Marilyn Lovell, Aug. 20, 1983, and newspaper articles from the Milford Daily News, Nov. 12, 1921; Dec. 12, 1987; Dec. 8, 1987; and Dec. 21, 1987.
