Remarks:
The sculpture was commissioned by the Ladies of Calais Memorial Society and cost approximately $5,000 to erect. The statue was dedicated to the memory of the five hundred men from both sides of the St. Croix River who has lost their lives in battle during the U. S. Civil War. The monument was presented to the City by Hon. E. B. Harvey and dedicated by the Joel A Haycock Post. Mayor G. A. Murchie accepted the monument on behalf of the city. The inscription on the front of the base was added sometime after the dedication ceremony. IAS files contain related newsclippings from the St. Croix Courier (April 26 1994); Bangor Daily News (May 29-30, 1993); and Calais Advertiser (1954).
