    Remarks:
The $4,000 monument was funded by public subscription and town appropriations, beginning with a $160.00 donation in April 1865 from the Claremont Auxiliary Sanitary Commission (a soldier's aid committee). The sculpture is a copy of Milmore's first Civil War Memorial figure erected at Forest Hills Cemetery (Roxbury, Massachusetts). An additional $1,553.97 was spent landscaping the town common for the memorial. The memorial was dedicated on the anniversary of the battle of Cedar Creek, Oct. 19. 1864.
