Inscription:  (On base:) Volunteer troops from this county formed the advance of the Grand Union Army of Nearly Three Million enlisted men 1861-1865. Dedicated 1906 Mifflin County's Tribute To Her Soldiers and Sailors. They fought and died that the Nation Might Live. Description:  A Civil War soldier stands at the top of a tall column which is adorned around the bottom with four military figures. The Civil War soldier stands with his proper right leg slightly forward. He holds an American flag near his proper left side with both hands. The top of the column is adorned with a Corinthian-style capital. The base of the column is adorned with four standing figures representing the Navy, Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery. The sculpture was funded by a local bond issue in the amount of $15,000 and by a local tax. An estimated 20,000 to 30,000 people attended the sculpture dedication on June 21, 1906. The June 1910 issue of Monumental News (pg. 437) notes that a Napoleon cannon and cannon balls were added to the monument.
