Description:
World War I soldier in uniform stands at parade rest. Both hands grasp the barrel of his rifle, the butt of which rests on the ground in front of his proper right foot. His proper left foot leans against a tree stump. He wears a hat, jacket with chevron patches, pants, boots, and a belt with several pouches and a sheathed knife attached to it.

Remarks:
Sponsored by Amos Wheatley and dedicated to the veterans of World War I. The rededication in 1989 was part of the culmination of a refurbishing project for Veterans' Memorial Park. The figure was knocked slightly off its original position by a collision with a tractor-trailer truck. IAS files contain a related article from The Highland Park Herald (Highland Park, NJ), Nov. 10, 1989, pg. 1. IAS files also contain reprint of an article from Daily Home News (New Brunswick, NJ) Nov. 11, 1921 that discusses the dedication ceremony, accompanied by a photo of the dedication ceremony prior to the figure's unveiling and a later, undated photo taken before the truck accident.
