Remarks:
The sculpture commemorates the seven astronauts killed aboard the space shuttle Challenger. Nearby plaque: "O, Ivory, cinder, Open Petals, Soar the Space Path, Flesh Spirits Heroes. McAuliffe, Onizuka Jarvis. McNair Smith Resnik Scobee." Poem on nearby plaque was written by Michael McClure. The memorial was one of the major components of the Bayfront Park re-design and renovation. The artist was also the primary architect for the redesigned park. The design for the sculpture was borrowed from Buckmister Fuller. For additional material, see Dore Ashton's "Noguchi East and West", New York: Knopf, 1992.
