Mercury and Commerce, (sculpture). Artist:  Evans, John, sculptor. Title:  Mercury and Commerce, (sculpture). Dates:  1906. Dedicated Sept. 11, 1906. Digital Reference:  Medium:  New Hampshire granite. Description:  Two male figures, nude except for drapery, are seated atop main door on the B & O Railroad Building. The figure on the left is Mercury, the god of transportation. He wears a round hat with wings and holds a caduceus in his proper left hand. The figure on the right has been called Progress, but is better known as Commerce. He has curly hair and holds an object in his proper left hand, balanced on his proper left knee. The front of a locomotive is visible under his proper right arm. A globe with North America showing stands between the figures, on a wreathed pedestal. The sculpture was cleaned by sandblasting in 1944 and 1973. In 1992-1993, the building was bird-proofed with netting installed by Bird Masters of Woburn, Massachusetts.
