Logan Holt Roots was born on March 26, 1841 at the family homestead, Locust Hill, near Tamaroa, Perry County, Illinois. He was the son of Benajah Guernsey and Martha Sibley (Holt) Roots. He died in Little Rock on May 30, 1893. On Aug. 9, 1871 he married Emily M. Blakeslee. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War, represented Arkansas in Congress from 1868-1871, was a U.S. marshal for the Western District of Arkansas from 1871-1872, and was president of the First National Bank in Little Rock.
